Joseph Montgomery "Joe" Hackett is the owner and founder of the one plane airline Sandpiper Air. Joe is the oldest and most mature of the Hackett brothers. Highly responsible, mildly neurotic and compulsively neat, At an early age Joe had dream of becoming a pilot. The Hacketts moved to Nantucket when Joe and Brian were children, then a new family moved next door. It was then that Joe first met Helen Chappel, who would soon become a life long friend of his. Throughout his high school career Joe excelled as an athlete and was star pitcher for the Sconset High baseball team. It was then that Joe met and fell in love with Carol, both he and Brian pined over Carol. He eventually ended up winning her over, but as soon as their wedding was to commence she ran off with Brian. This put a riff in the brothers' relationship, Joe about to give up on his dream met Fay Cochran a stewardess. He convinced her to come work for him and his new airline. Joe purchased a private charter company known as Sconset Air and renamed it to Sandpiper Air.

Brian Michael Hackett is the youngest and carefree of the Hackett brothers. His irresponsibility and
carelessness often annoy Joe. Brian had many opportunities including a free ride to Princeton only to
drop out, a promising career at NASA which he sabotaged, and other lucrative opportunities due to
his reckless nature. He moved to the island of Mystique in the Caribbean and ran charter flights there after he eloped with Joe's fiancee, Carol, which caused a rift between the brothers. Carol left Brian and he returned to Nantucket. Joe was persuaded to not only let Brian move in with him but he also hired him to be his
co-pilot at Sandpiper. Brian is a shameless womanizer, but has had two relationships one involving a pilot named Alex Lambert and another one involving Casey Chappel (Helen's sister)

He can be seen tricking a customer to board a plane after he orders a large meal. Roy steals both the meal and the tip that was left for Helen. He also establishes false charities to include one for his "late wife" and using the proceeds for fly-fishing trips or to subscribe to the Playboy Channel. He has an autographed picture of Richard Nixon in his office and was once arrested for trying to sneak aboard Air Force One to have a picture taken of himself shaking hands with President George H. W. Bush. Roy does however have a sense of humor and it shows when he celebrates his birthday once every four years because he was born on a leap day.
